Annual festivals June

Aani Uththiram –

Aani Uththiram

Aani Uththiram is an auspicious day in the Tamil Month of Aani (June – July) and is dedicated to Lord Natarajar (Shiva). The festival is also known as Aani Thirumanjanam (Holy bath) and is observed on the day when the star is Uththiram. On this day the Pradosha Abishekam performed in Lord Natarajar temple on the evening is considered to be highly auspicious and is the best time for worshipping Lord Shiva. Lord Natarajar is given six Abishekams in a year and this is one of them.

It is popularly believed that it was on Aani Uththiram day that Lord Shiva appeared before Sage Manikkavachakar, the author of Thiruvachakam, under a Kurundai Tree and offered upadesam (advice).

Special rituals and processions are held on the day at Natarajar Temple. It is believed that Lord Natarajar gives Tharisanam to his devotees in the months Aani and Markazhi.

The Lord's form demonstrates his five-fold functions:

Creation – the drum (udukkai) in His right hand signifies the origin of all life forms;
Destruction - The fire in His left hand means He is the destroyer of evil;
Protection - the raised second hand signifies that He is the protector of all life forms;
Concealment – the demon (Muyalakan) under His right foot signifies that ignorance is hidden under His foot;
Salvation - His other, slightly lifted, leg signifies salvation;

The arc of fire called Thiruvashi signifies the cosmos and the perpetual motion of the earth;
The lotus pedestal signifies Om, the sound of the universe;
His right eye, left eye and third eye signify the sun, moon and fire/knowledge, respectively;
The flowing of river Ganges through His matted hair signifies eternity of life;
The crescent moon in His hair signifies benevolence and beauty;

The six Abishekams of Lord Natarajar in one year:

A whole year for men is a day for Gods. Just as six poojas are performed in a day, six Abishekams are performed for Lord Natarajar in a year. They are as follows;

Markazhi Thiruvathirai (December – January) – indicates the first pooja
Masi Chaturdashi (February – March) – indicates the second pooja
Chithirai Thiruvonam (April – May) – indicates the third pooja
Aani Uththiram or Thirumanjanam (June – July) – indicates the fourth pooja
Aavani Chaturdashi (August – September) – indicates the fifth pooja
Puraddasi Chaturdashi (October – November) – indicates the sixth pooja

Out of these six Abishekams, Markazhi Thiruvathirai and Aani Uththiram are most important. These are conducted with main deity being brought outside the sanctum sanctorum in a procession that includes a car procession followed by the Abishekam ceremony.

திருவாசி எனப்படும் நெருப்பாலான வட்ட வில் - அண்டத்தையும் பூலோகத்தின் நிலையான அசைவையும் காட்டுவதாகும்;

மார்கழி திருவாதிரை முதல் பூசையை குறிக்கும்;
மாசி சதுர்த்தசி இரண்டாம் பூசையை குறிக்கும்;
சித்திரை திருவோணம் மூன்றாம் பூசையை குறிக்கும்;
ஆனி உத்திரம் (திருமஞ்சனம்) நான்காம் பூசையை குறிக்கும்;
ஆவணி சதுர்த்தசி ஐந்தாம் பூசையை குறிக்கும்;
புரட்டாசி சதுர்த்தசி ஆறாம் பூசையை குறிக்கும்;
