Annual Festivals - February

1) Maha Sivarathiri –
2) Masi Maham –

Maha Sivarathiri

Maha Sivarathiri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in respect of Lord Siva. The festival is observed for one day and one night only. This day falls on the day of the New Moon – Amavaasai in the month of Masi.

The term Maha Sivarathiri literally means ‘Great Night of Siva'. Maha Sivarathiri day is considered to be extremely auspicious by Siva devotees.

Legends: There are various legends related to this festival. Of them few are:

It is the day Lord Siva was married to the goddess Parvathi, and marks the combination of Siva and Sakthi (cosmic creation). Some believe that it was on the auspicious night of Sivarathiri that Lord Siva performed the ‘Thandava’ (cosmic dance), the dance of the creation, preservation and destruction (depicting the vibratory nature of all creations as proved by current scientific theories).

Also it is believed that it was on Sivarathiri that Lord Siva manifested himself in the form of a Lingam.

The legends signify that this day is the favourite of Lord Siva and throws light on his greatness and the supremacy over all other forms of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Lessons from the legendary stories are:

1 Even if one showers the Bilva (Bael) leaves on to Siva without realising all benefits will be bestowed upon

2 All sins will be negated even if the person is a hunter (killer)

3 Prayers, even when done unrealised, will result in excellent benefits in the next birth

Sivarathiri is considered especially auspicious for women. Married women pray for the well being of their husbands and sons, while unmarried women pray for an ideal husband like Siva, who is the spouse of Kali, Parvathi and Durga. But generally it is believed that anyone who utters the name of Siva during Sivarathiri with pure devotion is freed from all sins. He or she reaches the abode of Siva and is liberated from the cycle of birth and death. While most Hindu festivals are celebrated during the day, Maha Sivarathiri is celebrated during the night and day that come just before the new moon.

Those who fast on this day will have one meal on the day before and on Sivarathiri day after a bath sit in vigil all night and meditate uttering Lord Siva’s name and attending the poojas (with Bael leaves) at four times in the night. In the morning after a holy bath pray to Lord Siva in the temple and share food with other devotees and thus complete the fast.

Some others celebrate by fasting all day with special poojas and all night vigil offerings of Bael leaves (vilvam) to Lord Siva.

Masi Maham

Masi Maham comes in the Tamil month of Masi (February-March) on the full moon day when the star is Maham. It is an important day for the Tamils around the world who celebrate this day. This day is also called Kadaladum festival when it is usual to have holy bath. This day is famous because Goddess Ambikai is said to have been born on the day when the star is Maham.

It is one of the most favourable times for spiritual purification. Once a year the star which is the birth star of Kings and Ancestors aligns with the Full Moon and this is on the day of Masi Maham. It is believed that the soul which is caught up in the cycle of birth and death and engulfed in sadness, gets Gods salvation on this day by having a holy bath on this day. Those who cannot have a holy bath can fast and visit the temple and pray to obtain the benefits of abundance and prosperity associated with Full Moon and the majestic quality of the star Maha. This is the time to get rid of our ego and surrender at the feet of divine. Once in twelve years, Masi Maham attains special significance and then it is known as Maha Maham. Apart from the full moon, during the Maha Maham there is the movement of Jupiter into Leo (singha rasi.)

Maha Maham festival celebrated in the Mahamaham tank located in the South Indian town of Kumbakonam. Hindus consider taking a holy dip at the Mahamaham tank on the day of Maha Maham is sacred. The last Maha Maham was celebrated on March 6, 2004, with people from various places taking the holy dip in the Mahamaham tank.

Legend:

King Vallala of Thrivannamalai was a devotee of Lord Siva who once appeared before him as a child. Since the king had no children, Lord Siva promised him to perform his last rites on his death. The king died on Masi Maham day and Lord Siva performed his last rites. At the same time Lord Siva blessed the King that whoever takes a bath in the sea during Masi Maha will get Moksha. Thus it is believed that Lord Siva visits the sea every year to perform the last rites of the King Vallala.
