Aadi Pirappu

The first day of Tamil month Aadi is observed as Aadi Pirappu and celebrated by Tamil Hindu people. It is the festival of the beginning of the month. This is the beginning of all the festivals during the festival seasons. Once Aadi festival starts all other festivals follow one by one.

Starting this month the heat of the sun reduces and the rains start and the days are cooler. It is during this time that the monsoon peaks and the rivers shrunken in the summer heat get replenished, often to near full levels.

On this day Tamil people make special foods like Aadi Kool, Kolukattai and the family members enjoy sharing these, take part in special poojas and meet, greet and share this food with relatives and enjoy their goodwill.

Aadi Pirappu is an important and unique festival for Yarlpanam people. For them the month of Aadi is an enjoyable time. Family reunions due to Nallur Kandaswamy temple festival which happens during this month and other celebrations like flying kites and carnivals are the reasons for this enjoyment.

Aadi Perukku

Aadi Perukku, as the name indicates, rising or overflowing of rivers is a festival observed on the 18th day in Tamil month Aadi. The rivers overflow due to the monsoon rain. The festival is celebrated mainly by people residing along the banks of the River Kaveri in Tamil Nadu and is of great significance to people in Tamil Nadu and is celebrated well.
Special prayers and poojas are done in temples and people pray for a rich harvest, constant supply of water and hassle free monsoon.

In Yarlpanam, there are no rivers to get flooded and this festival is not an important one as in Tamil Nadu.

Aadi Amavaasai

The dark moon day in the Tamil month of Aadi is dedicated to dead forefathers and ancestors and is called Aadi Amavaasai. This is a significant day when you can connect with your ancestors and seek their blessings for a much comfortable life. It is believed that the ancestors will come to earth plane to bless their relatives and they can bring us great success. By remembering them and honouring them through the right rituals they become our caring guardians.

Ancestor worship is part of many cultures across the world. It is based on the belief that ancestors have the ability to influence of their living relatives. They act as intermediaries between the living beings and divine power. Even if one is not aware of their ancestors, the ancestors do have an impact on their life.

Fasting rituals:

Aadi Amavaasai Viratham is an important day for the Hindus and it involves Fasting, Holy bath, Tharpanam and Alms giving to the poor and needy in memory of the dead forefathers and ancestors. This Viratham is a way of thanksgiving to our forefathers who had been guiding our lives.

Those who will observe this Viratham will have a holy bath in places like a temple tank or well or sea or river and proceed to Sivan temple to take part in special Abishekams and poojas as well as perform Tharpanam in memory of their forefathers.

While men are out perfuming their rituals, ladies at home after their bath and without any breakfast will cook all kinds of food that the forefathers would have eaten. When the men arrive from the temple after their rituals, the food is served on several banana leaves, oil lamps lit and prayers are said in memory of forefathers. Then some portion of food is taken outside the house and served for the crows and when the crows have eaten the men join their family members and have their meals and thus break the fast. Hindus belief that by doing these the forefathers will have their sins and karma cleansed.

In Yarlpanam most of the rituals are observed in either Keerimalai or in the sea near Sivan temples where special poojas are arranged by temple authorities for this occasion.

Those who lost their mothers do observe similar rites on Chithira Paurnami day in April.
